These paintings and drawings have evolved from a
number of seemingly disparate subjects which include water,
environmental issues, the implications and effects of the production
of nuclear energy and weapons, geophysical phenomena, photographic
images and the alteration of land forms.
Ideas are drawn from written accounts or text of
some kind which refer to these subjects. I am interested in the use of
language, how it can obscure or reveal or have more than one meaning,
and in the qualities of photography (transparency, overlapping or
double imagery, masking, the employment of memory).
The photographs taken by Robert Polidori of the
Exclusion Zone around Chernobyl have been a great source of
inspiration, as well as many texts and other images recording details
of the Chernobyl Reactor explosion, and those relating previously
secret details of The Manhattan Project and the research at Los
Alamos, New Mexico.
I am also intrigued by the various states of water
(vapor, liquid, ice) and its physical and emotional effects.
